Minnesota Timberwolves…Looking For a Championship

In 1989, the Minnesota Timberwolves joined the NBA, giving the community there something to cheer about. Since their inception, the team has made it into the playoffs eight times, winning their division in 2004.

In 2007, the Minnesota Timberwolves went through a serious rebuilding period, trading and drafting many players. They made the largest trade in NBA history when they traded Kevin Garnett to the Boston Celtics and received five players, two first round draft picks and cash considerations in return. Unfortunately, the reworking of the team does not seem to have had the desired effects.

Off the court, the Minnesota Timberwolves are active with area youth through their foundation, the Fastbreak Foundation. They support youth initiatives through giving, education, and awareness. They run basketball camps and clinics as well as reading programs.

The Fastbreak Foundation holds online auctions every two weeks where fans can bid for items such as team memorabilia and items worn by players during games. Throughout the 2008-2009 season, the team gave grants each month to area organizations that best served the community in the theme of that month. They also provide scholarships in the amount of 2,000 dollars to five students each year who are enrolled in college programs for the fall semester.

Entertainment at Minnesota games includes the amazing dance teams. The Timberwolves Dancers, the Hoop Troop, Beat Squad, and the 1st Ave Breakers all work together to make game day in Minnesota an experience like no other. Add in Crunch, the wild wolf mascot and you’ll never forget your visit to the Target Center.

The team’s colors are black, blue, silver, green, and white. They got their name from a contest in which the “Timberwolves” was submitted along with 1,282 other names. The winner of the contest won a trip to the NBA All-Star weekend held in 1987. Of course, the nickname has great significance for residents of the state. Minnesota is home to the most timberwolves found anywhere in the lower 48 states.

The Target Center is home of the Minnesota Timberwolves and has seating for 20,500 fans, with club seating and executive suites available. The venue was constructed in 1990 and underwent extensive renovations in 2004 to bring it up to date and make it more competitive with other venues in the league. It has more than 20 concession stands located throughout the two main concourses and features a moveable arena floor.
